HAVANA, Cuba – The Cuban government has decided to rename the NHL’s “Honey Chicken” team to “The Honey Team.”
The move comes as the NHL continues to look for a new name to use for the Miami Heat’s team that plays in a newly named arena, the American Hockey League’s Miami Gardens.
The new team is currently called the “Cucurucu Honey Team” and will play at the new arena in the early part of next season.
The team will be the first of five in the league to be named after a particular country, according to Cuban news agency CNA.
Hair is still the official colour of the Honey Team.
The Cuban government will also introduce new rules to allow for the hiring of players of any nationality, including Cuban citizens.
The NHL will be joined by the US, South Korea and Canada in the name change.
The league has had no changes to its national anthem, logo or uniform since it was introduced in 1967.
